Book a Boiler Service
Booking a service on your oil / gas boiler is a good idea to ensure it is clean and running efficiently before the cold months set in. You should also get a check on any air source or ground source heat pump. An annual check will help look after your heating system and flag up any issues.
Also ask your engineer to check that your radiators are properly balanced. If you have some radiators in your home that are warmer than others, the lock shield can be closed slightly to increase the flow to the colder radiators further away from the boiler.
It seems there are still many people with little or no loft insulation. This is a relatively cheap project and will certainly make your home warmer. The idea then is that your boiler doesn’t need to work as hard to keep the home warm.
Don’t forget to insulate pipes in the loft or outside to prevent them from freezing.
Should I Clean My Chimney?
Now is a good time to have your chimney cleaned if you burn wood or coal. Burning unseasoned (damp) logs can cause creosote to build up in your chimney. If this catches fire, it will burn at an extremely dangerous temperature and can threaten your property.
It’s good to have the chimney professionally swept and checked to ensure fumes escape safely. The chimney specialist can also check for cracks where dangerous gasses could escape into your home. In this case it would be important to have your chimney lined.
Clearing your gutters allows the rainwater to flow down into the drains properly. It’s common that moss and leaves can build up within your gutters causing blockages. This can overflow leading to damp.
